Food for thought

When you combine the alluring architecture, the flawless service, the compelling history and the unrivalled cuisine, you can understand why the Criterion Restaurant has been so revered and admired since it first opened its doors in 1873. The Criterion Restaurant is the only culinary destination in the capital blessed with the romance, grandeur and charisma of a neo-Byzantine design. Few would argue that it is one of the most enchanting and, indeed, memorable restaurants in London… perhaps even the world.

Lush, extravagant and utterly compelling, the interior seduces diners with the glint and allure of gold and marble. Look around and absorb the gilded ceiling, the grand windows and imposing arches, the fascinating recesses and mirrored walls. And all of this situated in the effervescent heart of Piccadilly Circus. No wonder the restaurant has such a mythical reputation. Of course, a restaurant is nothing without its cuisine, and with head chef, Matthew Foxon, running things in the kitchen, diners can look forward to an exquisite array of mouth-watering delights.

Matthew only uses the finest and freshest ingredients and when he is not creating alchemy in the kitchen, he is scouring the land for new suppliers. He believes in forming close relationships with the farms he sources from and looks for purveyors who concentrate on a single area of expertise; something that, he insists, is an indication of true passion.

The fish is chosen every morning from across the South Coast and delivered the same day to ensure freshness. The meat is all rare breed, sourced from individual farms, free range and out door reared, hung for a minimum of five weeks and butchered on the premises. Bread is made and butter is churned on the premises too. That’s not all; the chefs at the Criterion also smoke their own fish and make all their own pasta, ricotta, ice cream and sorbet. But it’s what Matthew actually does with the ingredients that delights the Criterion’s guests. The tantalising ‘Modern European’ menu, is clearly one of the main reasons why visitors both recommend and return to the restaurant again and again.

The name alone conjures up visions of a glorious past. As you sit and lose yourself in the opulence of the neo-Byzantine architecture, it’s easy to believe the building is soaked in a fascinating history. With its gold and marble shimmering alongside the mosaics, mirrors and plaques, the restaurant has an almost celestial air. If the walls could talk, they would surely whisper to you their secrets.

They would tell of when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first imagined the meeting between Dr. Watson and the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes in the Criterion Long Bar. Or the gatherings of the proud suffragettes, and how their resolute discussions changed the face of democracy.

They may elaborate on the charged negotiations between Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George as the two political titans thrashed out their views. More recently, they would describe the epic Hollywood production of The Dark Knight, as well as the magnetic presence of Russell Crowe as he filmed scenes for A Good Year and Madonna when she filmed the stunning W.E.

Winning ‘Best London Restaurant’ in 2010 and 2011, the Criterion has been brought back into its well-deserved spotlight, and ensured that the hallowed walls will have many more a story to tell for years to come.

Cruising for success

Peru is in the spotlight, and for very important reasons. There’s a big chance you have seen its latest campaign in which it speaks about the power of today, the value of experiencing, living and learning while discovering the beauties it has to offer. The Amazon rainforest is a key component to that concept. In a world of fast decisions and instant connectivity, to be able to disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in a secluded haven that will likely bring personal growth is just priceless. And what a better destination to do it at than the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

This area is one of the world’s most important biodiversity reserves, the largest reserve in Peru, about the size of Slovenia – 2,079,954 hectares to be exact – and lies 32 metres above sea level. The reserve is meant to house and protect species native to the low-lying jungle. Some of these species are on the verge of extinction, including the spider monkey, giant otter, manatee, and the harpy eagle. Now that we have the perfect setting, here we present the perfect vehicles: the Delfin I and Delfin II, both Luxury Expedition Cruising vessels owned and managed by Delfin Amazon Cruises (DAC).

DAC has taken personalised boutique travel one step beyond the ordinary. Their first-class service allows guests to explore the beauty the area has to offer, and relax in the comfort and style guests deserve. At DAC, they have a long-term commitment to the Amazon and to all their guests. They believe that from the minute guests set foot on Iquitos until they depart back home, guests deserve top quality services, delivered with grace and authenticity.

Bringing together an encounter from the best of both worlds, guests enjoy the Amazon rainforest as a magical place. Its sounds, aromas, and atmosphere will capture guests with awe. While staying true to the natural architecture and design of the local environment, the vessels manage to bring the comfort and style of a 5-star hotel.

The Delfin I is their smallest vessel, with four extraordinary cabins, it offers the most private experience and the opportunity to share with family and friends an expedition like no other. Each spacious cabin comes with a lounge area, a private terrace, and two of them include a whirlpool for guests to enjoy the stunning 180 degree views of the greenest sun-filled jungle.

The Delfin II has 14 cabins, four located in the front with panoramic views, and 10 located on the sides with picture perfect wall-to-wall windows for guests to observe the passing by and ever-changing scenery.

After a day of fun-filled activities, guests enjoy the opportunity to connect with nature, to relax on soft and large sofas while seeing the breathtaking sights of the Amazon and brilliant stargazing at night. This is one of the main benefits of cruising the Amazon, to have the opportunity to see different landscapes from the comfort of the ship.

Gourmet Peruvian eateries are booming around the world, capturing savvy palates with flavourful dishes. There are several regional cuisines that vary directly based on the resources available to their areas. The executive chef Isaac Saavedra  – probably the best chef on the Amazon River – will surprise guests with the wonders of Amazon Creole Cuisine. He spoils guests with a unique culinary experience utilising fresh local ingredients such as Doncella (an exquisite type of Catfish), heart of palm, avocado, cocona and sachaculantro.

A wellness specialist offers relaxing massage sessions at a minimal fee, and for those wanting to really unwind they have a superb mixologist aboard each vessel ready to take guests on a tour of tasteful cocktails. Some mixes are distinctly native to Peru and the Amazon region, which makes the Open Bar on the Delfin I only more attractive.
The personalised and warm service from their crew makes a strong impact on passengers as well; and their knowledgeable naturalist will guide guests into learning and discovering. With an average ratio of one crewmember per every guest, the intimate cruising experience guarantees maximum attention to detail.

The Delfin I & Delfin II are both expedition cruises; hence, two to three activities are conducted throughout the day to keep passengers in contact with the environment. They offer five days/four nights and four days/three nights programmes aboard both of their vessels, private charters may also be arranged. Night safaris, piranha fishing, bird watching, swimming around dolphins, and flora and fauna spotting are all part of the experience.

Both vessels have recently added Kayaking as an additional activity, ideal for fishing or paddling through quiet waters. It allows close encounter with nature, wildlife and also sporadic encounters with friendly villagers.

Canopy Walking in a private reserve is also offered in selected programmes, enhancing guests’ experience by placing them right in the middle of the action in the attic of the Amazon. Exceptional views of unspoiled forests will enchant visitors while crossing over 400 metres of hanging bridges. Charming three-toed sloths, energetic troops of monkeys, dinosaur-looking iguanas, passive crocodiles, graceful hoatzins, and mystical pink dolphins are just a few of the many creatures that inhabit this area. The flora enchants visitors as well, with its stunningly tall ceiba trees (some species surpassing 60 metres of height), giant water lilies, and flirty bromeliads and orchids, amongst others.

During the rainy season in the Andes (December-May), water level rises in the Amazon, flooding 85 percent of the reserve, making it only accessible by speedboat, allowing travellers even deeper into the jungle. Hidden lagoons, breathtaking landscapes, and closer encounters to wildlife are just some of the benefits of travelling during this time of the year. For active travellers who like to venture into the jungle, the low water level season (June-November) is the ideal season to travel. Visitors will be able to hike through this pristine and unique ecosystem, passing through a classic tropical rainforest with emergent trees and canopy trees reaching up to 55 metres in height.

DAC is committed to make a low impact on the environment and local culture, while helping to generate sustainable economy for the river people or “ribereños”, as they are known. They work very closely with the women of Puerto Miguel, a small river community with whom they have built a fantastic arts and crafts market with a variety of palm fibre, natural seeds and wood products. Currently there are about 45 women working together to provide for their families. By empowering them they are not only helping their families, but are also helping to protect the wildlife in the area, since men don’t have to hunt creatures illegally to bring bread to the table anymore.

The masterminds behind this vertically integrated well-oiled machine are Aldo Macchiavello and his wife and partner Lissy Urteaga. Aldo is a former senior banker with 30 years of experience in the Finance world, and Lissy is the creative soul of the company that gives the magic touch to evxtery corner of their properties. Together, with their taste for casual yet refined travel, they are dedicated to entertain and enlighten guests who visit this paradise in style. They conduct their operation hoping to conscientiously introduce the world through experiential education.

A load off your mind

Rimowa counts among the premium brands for cases made of aluminium and the high-tech material polycarbonate and is one of the few manufacturers producing luggage in Germany. It is possibly also the only manufacturer with a continuous history and a strong link with tradition – an exception in the industry. For Rimowa “Made in Germany” and “German Engineering” mean excellent materials, brilliant technology and extraordinary design with the very highest quality of workmanship.

In 2000, Rimowa was the first in the industry to globally introduce polycarbonate into its case production – and thus revolutionised the global market in luggage. More than three years were spent on research before the first Rimowa case made of polycarbonate satisfied the demands of the engineers and designers. The triumph of this material which was derived from aviation technology and has been used by more and more competitors since Rimowa’s success, lies in its fantastic properties: Light as a feather and at the same time extremely resilient, the material ‘saves’ its form and in the event of deformations, springs back to its original visual effect as if by magic. This remarkable capability was even confirmed by the TÜV, who test each series manufactured by Rimowa.

For decades, the unmistakable characteristic of the continuously optimised collections has been the elegant and instantly recognisable contour structure of the cases. The traditional company is based in Cologne, sells its products globally in more than 65 countries via selected dealers, but also through its own stores and flagship stores, whose number is continuously increasing throughout the world. These are always found in the best locations and in cities such as Beverly Hills, Toronto, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Beijing, Macao, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Singapore, Tokyo, Munich and Milan.

In addition to the four global headquarters in Cologne, Hong Kong, Canada and Sao Paulo, since 2008 Rimowa has had an international network of production workshops. Rimowa cases are manufactured in Germany, the Czech Republic and Canada. A major part of the production work is still done by hand, for this is the only way to guarantee the extraordinary quality of a Rimowa case. Only the polycarbonate bodies are deep drawn by a machine – a procedure developed by Rimowa itself in order to guarantee the greatest possible flexibility and robustness of this material.

There is no question that other German premium brands are also happy to enter into co-operation with Rimowa. Business synergies with Porsche and Lufthansa have existed for several years: Rimowa supplies the Lufthansa World Shop with its products and also participates in the Lufthansa premium system.

And, if you are the owner of a Porsche, you also have access to a very special service: Rimowa luggage to match the colour of your vehicle. Bringing together qualities that belong together – design, capability, futurism, style fidelity, high quality, brilliant practicability and the feeling of owning something special – every piece of Rimowa luggage feels like a naturally useful and elegant accessory.

Every year tells a story
The history of the company whose luggage is highly valued around the globe by business travellers, flight crews, tourists, modern high-tech nomads, filmmakers and photographers, started more than 100 years ago. It is a typically German – and thus extraordinary – success story of an enthusiastic visionary and his family business and their continuous rise to the position of global leading player.

The first case was produced in 1898 in Cologne, and at the time the name of the company was Kofferfabrik Paul Morszeck. At the turn of the century, the cases were made of wood but the Cologne factory was already setting new standards with designs that were as lightweight as possible. Within a few years, Rimowa’s large wardrobe and steamer trunks would become the representative travel companions of high society.

In the 1920s discerning globetrotters were delighted by the elegant cases produced by the company. In 1937, Richard Morszeck, the son of the company founder, brought the first steamer trunk made of lightweight metal onto the market. This was just the first of numerous brilliant innovative ideas upon which the global success of Rimowa would be based. The brand name Rimowa was later derived from Richard Morszeck (Richard Morszeck Warenzeichen).

In 1950, the firm created its first case made from aluminium with the typical contour structure that has since made Rimowa products unmistakeable. This new design combined minimum weight with maximum stability and quickly attained cult status among the international jet set.

In 1976, Dieter Morszeck, the grandson of the company founder, succeeded with another pioneering development – the first waterproof transport case. These pieces were in great demand among film and television crews and with professional photographers and reporters as the Rimowa waterproof system reliably protected the sensitive equipment of the professionals against water, humidity, tropical heat or artic cold.

In 1998, Rimowa celebrated its 100-year company anniversary. Technical precision, high-quality materials, precision workmanship and continuous striving for innovation and intelligent product improvement formed the pillars of success and Rimowa luggage was cemented as the epitome of high-end travel.

Continuing to innovate, in 2000, Dieter Morszeck, who since 1981 has been the third-generation family member to head the company, for the first time used the recyclable material polycarbonate in case construction.

Polycarbonate, which is used for aeroplane panels and in vehicle construction, is extremely resilient and shock proof, while dents regain their original form independently and provide great stability and low weight. Rimowa was thus the first luggage manufacturer worldwide to use this plastic. This revolution in the industry was subsequently adopted by almost all competitors, who would follow with their own polycarbonate lines. None, however, would be as successful as Rimowa, whose luggage continues to lead the industry in design, performance and durability – this fulfilling Dieter Morszeck’s credo: “Handcraft meets high tech”.

Innovation never sleeps
Between 2000 and 2006, Rimowa further diversified its product lines and equipped them with state-of-the-art technology. Among other things, innovations include the patented ‘Multiwheel’ systems, which greatly increase the mobility of the cases. Thanks to technology adapted from office chairs, even heavy cases can be rotated almost playfully on their axis. Moreover, the new cases are equipped with certified combination locks with combined closing cylinders, which can be opened for inspection purposes by the American Transportation Security Administration (TSA) upon arrival in the USA. Modular interior pocket systems, rotatable handles, the development of the Tango wardrobe trunk and co-operation with Lufthansa and Porsche have further increased the kudos of the company.

In 2008, the product range was extended again to include the Salsa Deluxe series, available in new colour shades, in addition to the new Topas Titanium luxury line. A dozen different case series in various sizes are now waiting to be put to all-round use under the hardest of conditions. Later in 2009, Rimowa released the highly-popular Salsa Air, which was the first to contain a recessed combination lock with an ABUS TSA cylinder that was developed in Europe.

The 60th anniversary of aluminium cases was celebrated in 2010, along with a decade of using polycarbonate. This year also saw Rimowa receive two awards from the USA – the Salsa Deluxe was named ‘Best Luggage’ by travel magazine Travel+Leisure, while the Salsa Air was awarded first prize in the Travel Goods Association Awards.

Back to the present day and Rimowa is still being recognised for its excellent range of luggage for all kinds of professionals around the globe. Finally, in 2012 the firm proudly received ‘Best Business Travel Accessory, 2012’ for the Salsa Air in the Business Destinations Travel Awards and is looking forward to another decade of excellence in luggage design.

The star treatment

In the 18th Century, it became fashionable to be at one with nature; the mountains, the sea and the waterfalls had never been so present. With the July Monarchy, many seaside towns underwent a transformation and alongside Trouville and Biarritz, Cannes, a small fishing port, became a seaside holiday resort. Around 1865, the arrival of the railway announced an important expansion for the town, the clientele became international and La Croisette acted as a backdrop for a parade of personalities from royalty and the arts.

Towards 1910, each well-known seaside resort acquired one or even a few “palace” hotels.

Nice built the Negresco, Cabourg the Grand hotel, Trouville the Trouville Palace. In Cannes, the architect Charles Dalmas, a student of Victor Laloux, was commissioned to build the Carlton, a task to which he devoted himself to from 1909 to 1913.

The magnificent front of the Carlton became a monumental reference point in the city landscape of Cannes, recognised throughout the world. The corners, with their distinctive conical domes, dominate the Croisette. The main façade is set out in a symmetrical fashion whilst the exterior is adorned with cornices of flowers and figurines and the entire building was painted white.

Since 1989, the edifice has been registered at the inventory of ‘Monuments Historiques’, and in 2001, 18 months of work aiming to restore the façade to its original conception was competed at a cost of s7m. Since then the domes have recovered their splendour; the natural slates are shining again and the hotel has regained its spectacular panache.

Rooms & suites
All sea view rooms and suites of the Carlton InterContinental have been renovated (approximately 200 rooms out of all 343 of the Palace). The likes of Grace Kelly, Gary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock have filmed several scenes at the Carlton. These include ‘To Catch a Thief’; the cult film that inspired Nicholas Papamiltiades, a young interior designer from Paris, who recreated the glamorous Hollywood cinema ambience in the rooms of the Carlton.

An elegant and refined decoration for those premises is still marked by the footprints of the biggest names of the cinema, such as Orson Welles, Gary Cooper, Liz Taylor, Alfred Hitchcock and many others. Here, everything is luxurious, elegant and refined – a place full of glamour and allure – sobriety with a hint of sophistication. Pure lines, noble materials, harmony of colours – everything evokes luxury which carries itself to the balcony where the infinite blue of the Mediterranean Sea catches everyone’s eye. As a tribute to the Cannes Film Festival, the Carlton has also named some of its most prestigious suites after the Presidents of the jury who have followed one another over the years.

Bars & cuisine
Located in the lobby, the Carlton Bar owes its name to the numerous stars that make this their favourite meeting place during the film festival. Overlooking the Croisette, the famous Carlton terrace is the ideal place to enjoy a delicious cocktail while watching the most magnificent Mediterranean sunsets. It also serves as an ideal place to admire the fireworks during summer nights. The Carlton terrace also welcomes you for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Additionally, The InterContinental Carlton Cannes has just completed renovation of its wine cellar. It has treated its wines to facilities that are perfect, both technically and aesthetically. Here, superb old barrels serve as tables and walls disappear behind vast wooden racks and every now and again, this handsome setting hosts wine-tastings.

Chef Laurent Bunel provides guests with sumptuous feasts from his kitchen that would be the envy of any chef. These are created from years of experience in renowned establishments including ‘Le Chabichou’ at Courchevel, ‘l’Hotel du Golf’ and ‘Le Royal’ in Deauville, Bernard Loiseau’s restaurant, and ‘Le Saint Géran’, located in Mauritius.

Leipzig’s congress offerings

Meeting planners appreciate good venues – but these are not the key factor when they decide where to organise a conference. First, they look at the quality of the destination as a whole: hotels, infrastructures, accessibility, and the image of the city in general. The team of the CCL Congress Center Leipzig has understood this vital truth and that is why they have created powerful networks among all meeting industry suppliers in Leipzig. And beyond – they closely co-operate with local scientific and business communities who have the potential to attract conferences to the city. A unique spirit of co-operation – this is what they consider their biggest achievement and as the key to their success. This is what has brought them among the top ten of German meeting venues, and among the top 100 international congress centres.

“Yes, we do have a beautiful venue and first-class service. However, the main reason behind the CCL success story is excellent networking. We closely cooperate with PCOs, leading scientists and research facilities. That’s how we have been able to attract major and high-profile conventions to Leipzig”, says André Kaldenhoff, Executive Director of the CCL.

Flexible venue with a modular concept
The Congress Center Leipzig is part of the Leipzig Trade Fair exhibition and convention centre which was opened in April 1996, and it belongs to the Leipzig Trade Fair Group.

State-of-the-art facilities and high-tech communication systems blend with exciting architecture, landscaping and artistic design to set the scene for unforgettable conventions. Experts and writers have repeatedly described the property as the epitome of all that’s modern. Thanks to the clever modular concept for its use of space, the CCL is just as suited for small conferences as it is for large-scale congresses and exhibitions with several thousand participants. The CCL building can be used individually, or in combination with exhibition halls, and the Glass Hall.

The CCL building
Architectural beauty and sophisticated design are the trademarks of the CCL. Yet, the layout of the building is extremely simple, and the orientation within the building is perhaps easier than in any congress centre. There are four levels, and the largest hall holds 1,100 people. Overall, the 23 independent rooms, banqueting halls, lecture theatres and seminar rooms offer maximum seating for up to 3,700 people. In addition, the CCL has available 3,650sq m of gross surface area, which can be used for exhibitions, presentations or catering facilities to accompany the congresses.

The Exhibition Hall
Exhibition Hall Two is directly connected with the CCL building and its gross exhibition space of 20,500sq m can be subdivided. An in-built flexible system of partitioning walls allows the creation of segments of either 10,000sq m, or 5,000sq m. The hall features all supply functions and is fully equipped for data transfer and multimedia communication. This flexible facility sets a perfect scene for creative and innovative concepts of event design, integrating plenary meeting space for several thousand attendants, catering areas, and virtually unlimited space for exhibitions.

The Glass Hall
Entrance Hall West, or ‘the Glass Hall’, the work of English star architect Ian Ritchie, arches high above visitors’ heads, covering more than two football pitches. It is 240 metres long and spans an area 80 metres wide. There are 20,000sq m on two open levels, capable of accommodating 4,500 people – offering an incomparable setting for exhibitions, events, presentations, receptions, and gala evenings. The open spaces and water features provide inspiration for some electrifying event ideas.

A network for success
Looking at the yearly number of conferences and attendance figures, the Congress Center Leipzig ranks among Germany’s top ten meeting venues. In terms of quality and service, the CCL is one of the acknowledged market leaders, but what makes the venue special is not only the powerful and modern infrastructure – it is above all a very personal style. This comes from the CCL’s staff members, their commitment, their love for the city of Leipzig, and for their clients. From F&B catering, building and furnishing exhibition stands, decoration and technical equipment to handling travel and accommodation issues, social programmes and PR campaigns: the network of companies and units belonging to the Leipzig Trade Fair Group always offer a flexible, high-quality, and good value-for-money service.

The Fairgourmet GmbH provides F&B services for visitors to the CCL. Highest quality standards, the commitment of the staff, and the experienced management ensure that food and drinks served at the CCL are a culinary delight. Be it a quick snack in the bistros of the exhibition halls, be it a decent lunch in one of the four à la carte or self-service restaurants, or be it a gala night in the breathtaking Glass Hall: Fairgourmet offers perfect solutions tailor-made to the requirements of each event.

Fairnet GmbH, another part of the Leipzig Trade Fair Group, plans, co-ordinates and implements all services needed for a successful large-scale conference, for a breathtaking exhibition, or for a spectacular special event.

Fairnet’s scope of services includes a purpose-built large plenary auditoria in the exhibition halls, exhibition management, construction of individual and shell-scheme exhibition stands, rental of furniture, complete AV equipment availability as well as stages and decoration services.

A quality meeting destination
What matters just as much or even more than the quality of a meeting venue is the attractiveness of the host city. The Leipzig area has powerful infrastructures with excellent traffic connections and a truly outstanding choice of hotels in all categories, totalling 6,500 rooms in 50 hotels. An essential factor of Leipzig’s attractiveness is the unique cultural heritage and the wide variety of cultural and leisure offers. There are so many options – from a concert of the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra to a relaxed pub crawl at night.

Leipzig is a prominent centre of science, research, and innovation. Synergies with Leipzig University, founded in 1409, with renowned hospitals and research institutes, make the CCL a preferred venue for conferences dealing with the issues of the future. Leipzig also stands for innovative technologies, industries and services. The Porsche and BMW factories are icons of a strong automotive and supplying industry in our area: the energy and environment sector and the domain of logistics and services are equally well represented.

Corporate responsibility
Leipzig Trade Fair, including the Congress Center Leipzig, commit themselves to the principles of corporate responsibility. Under the headline Wachsen in Balance (Growing in Balance) Leipzig Trade Fair has launched a transparent and measurable sustainability management system. The objective is to create a new balance between economic growth, and responsibility for the environment and the society. Having undergone a sustainability audit process, Leipziger Messe received the Green Globe Certificate in February 2010 (renewed in 2012) – the internationally renowned and recognised sustainability certificate of the event and tourism industry. The process of auditing has also revealed future objectives for making Leipzig Trade Fair’s operations and policies even more sustainable. Growth on a long-term basis is only possible if the interests of the environment, of society, and of business partners are respected, and if they are given the opportunity to grow as well. Acting in a sustainable way is an investment into the foundations of  a common future existence.

Bern the midnight oil

Right in the centre of the up-market shopping district, close to the waterfront and adjacent to the pretty Berzelii Park lies Berns Hotel – an oasis of contemporary culture and a must-see during any visit to Stockholm. What sets this building apart is its interior – the contrast between modernity and history – and the flow of people coming through its doors from different parts of the world and with vastly different backgrounds, but all drawn to the many attractions of Berns.

Berns Hotel offers an extraordinary combination of food, design, popular culture, history, nightlife and much more. You could even say it is a boutique hotel out of the ordinary.

Adjacent to the hotel’s reception, in the oldest part of the building and at its heart, is the Asian-fusion restaurant, Berns Asiatiska. In 1863, the founder Robert Berns opened a concert venue and a ‘Swiss café’ here, offering liqueurs and pastries. Today, guests can still top off their lunch, brunch or dinner with a selection of homemade sweet treats from the dessert buffet. The savoury cuisine served at Asiatiska has an interesting history too, as it was here that Stockholm’s first Chinese restaurant opened in 1944. If you fancy French dishes for a change, Berns Bistro & Bar is well worth a try. Situated in a separate glass pavilion to the front of the hotel, amid the greenery of Berzelii Park, you’ll find delicious authentic cuisine, unpretentious service and a relaxed dining ambience.

As well as eating well at Berns, many guests choose the hotel to see their favourite artist play in the grand concert hall. Since opening, Berns has attracted both renowned Swedish artists and international music stars. Josephine Baker, Edith Piaf, The Supremes and Bob Dylan are just a few of many world-reknowned artists who have performed here over the years. And innovative contemporary musicians such as Erykah Badoo, Robyn, Lily Allen, Regina Spector and Rufus Wainwright have all found their way to the stage at Berns in recent years. They all choose Berns not only because of its impressive historical setting and cult appeal, but also because its relatively small stage allows both artist and audience to enjoy an intimate show. Indeed, as many of the artists also stay at Berns between performances, fans stand a good chance of rubbing shoulders with their idols at one of the hotel’s bars or in its popular nightclub, 2.35:1.

Art exhibitions, a nightclub, several bars and much more – Berns’ calendar of events is a never ending surprise thanks to the versatility of some of the most spectacular meeting spaces in Stockholm. The larger venue halls are often booked for conferences, launches, business dinners or private parties and Berns hosts many large events each year including the prominent Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Stockholm Jazz Festival 2012 and Stockholm Design Week.

Whatever your reason for visiting Berns, you are guaranteed a memorable stay. The bedrooms have been individually decorated with fabrics and furniture reminiscent of the playful world of Swedish design icon Estrid Ericson – each further enhanced with colourful modern artworks and stylish bathrooms. Some of the rooms and suites have retained elements from a bygone age – such as tiled stoves and mullioned windows – which, together with handpicked vintage furniture, give each room a homely feel with a fascinating story. However, more than anything, the friendly English-speaking staff at the front desk – and throughout the hotel – will make sure Berns feels like a home away from home.

On the road to Santiago

Seeking Alpha called it the “emerging market that will outperform the indexes of the developed world and possibly some of the BRIC countries.” The recent mining collapse made headlines for six months. But despite the press furore, the copper industry, combined with what is now a democratic liberal government, have made the country a thriving and attractive destination. And La Moneda, the baroque-style building where Allende was shot, is still Santiago’s centre of government.

Originally built as the national mint, La Moneda now houses the offices of the president and ministers. Alongside sits its cultural centre, which is home to ongoing exhibitions and the National Film Archive. Central shops hawk traditional patterned blankets, carves and pottery, and tribal figurines.

Those seeking serious retail therapy will enjoy the barrio central, and the exclusive Vitacura district. As well as being packed with designer boutiques – Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel – it also showcases colonial architecture in the imposing private villas. The Parque Bicentario offers the opportunity to watch the local elite play football and feed the ducks. Or, if you fancy some exercise, Santa Lucia Hill, over in downtown Lastarria, is only a 69-metre ascent up a path through flower meadows and ponds, to a panoramic view of the city. The Andes mountains form an imposing backdrop.

The Virgin Mary stands high above Santiago – or rather, a white brick statue of her. The monument was partly created by French sculptor Bartholdi, who worked on New York’s Statue of Liberty. It is just a 300m walk up the San Cristóbal Hill, in the Parque Metropolitano, Those who cannot hack the hour-long climb can take the funicular from Bellavista.

Other cultural highlights include the Museo de la Solidaridad Salvador Allende, which displays South American and European art including works by Picasso. The National Museum of Fine Arts houses pieces by Chile’s most well-known artists: nineteenth-century landscape artist Pedro Lira and twentieth-century surrealist Roberto Matta. Chile’s Nobel Prize-winning poet, Pablo Neruda, had a house in Bellavista that has become La Chascona museum, a monument to his secret life there with his lover Matilde.

A slightly anomalous Chilean tradition is the ‘coffee with legs’, (café con piernas), where women in short skirts serve drinks to male professionals of all ages. In this age of equality, though, there are even some targeted at women, who meet up with friends to join in the frolicsome atmosphere. If you want something stronger, the national aperitif is the pisco sour, a potent cocktail made mixing pisco spirit with sugar, lime juice and egg white. Or you could knock your socks off with the ‘terremoto’ (‘earthquake’), a refreshing combination of sweet white wine served with pineapple sorbet. Those seeking a guided alcoholic education should contact Santiago Adventures (+ 56 2 244 2750), who arrange one-day wine-tasting trips to the Corcoran Gallery and M&S suppliers, the Casas del Bosque.

For hotels, try the top-billed ‘Le Reve Hotel Boutique,’ whose richly-patterned opulent interior is complimented by intimate yet friendly hospitality. A renovated colonial townhouse in the Orego Luco district provides an authentic Chilean experience. The best restaurant is by consensus the Peruvian-French hybrid Astrid y Gaston (+ 56 2 650 9125), which has another branch in Providencia. Needless to say, you pay a premium for quality. In sophisticated Vitacura, simply stroll down the main street Nueva Costanera where you are inundated with quality restaurants. Puerto Fuy (+ 56 2 208 8908) does traditional Chilean seafood. Don’t forget to try the inexplicably popular steak, avocado and cheese sandwich.

For nightlife, the Bar El Atico is popular for those seeking a Britpop fix, as it eschews reggae and South American pop for western indie angst like Radiohead and the Pixies. For those who like to shake their hips, take a dance class at David and Yasna’s Dance Academy. Or you could head to Barrio Lastarria, which has a wide range of bars as well as a cinema and theatre. Watch out for the elusive man in a skirt and headscarf who sells doll heads from a blanket.

Sliding on Greece

Just like last summer, when the downgrade of the US government’s borrowings sent investors running for cover, the failure of the Greek election to deliver a government means risk, across the board, is being taken off the table.

It is not a rush for the exit but, at the margin where the price of financial assets is set, it’s been enough to take 10 percent or so off markets. I would be surprised if they recovered that loss very soon and I think the parallel with the summer of 2011 will continue. That means that the bottom of the current slide may well not have been reached yet and that, once it is, markets will bounce around in an extremely uncomfortable fashion for many weeks thereafter. Markets are being driven by politics and they won’t stabilise while the Greek situation is unresolved and, more importantly, while the threat remains that Spain or Italy could go the same way.

My hunch is that this is unlikely. Indeed, a Greek exit from the eurozone (and, who knows, the European Union too, if the leaders that finally emerge refuse to play ball) could be the catalyst needed for the remaining countries to do what is required to hold things together. Greece is being led to the sacrificial altar pour encourager les autres.

Does the market’s  reaction to this over the past few weeks or so make sense? Possibly not in fundamental terms, but it absolutely does in terms of investor sentiment. The eurozone accounts for around 10 percent of the value of world stock markets and European companies derive less than half of their profits from within the euro area. What is going on in Greece has no bearing on housing starts in the US (which are picking up) or electricity output in China (which is not). Greece is neither here nor there in the context of a $14trn European economy. But markets hate uncertainty and that is what we must accept for the rest of the summer.

Taking a couple of steps back from the immediate crisis, the volatility of markets is something that we are going to have to get used to. Indeed, the dramatic ups and downs that have characterised the Japanese market over the 20 years of its post-bubble deleveraging could be the template for Europe as the painful process of mending the region’s balance sheets is endured for years to come. This is an extremely difficult environment for investors, especially if your main experience of investing was during the aberrational years between 1982 and 2000, when everything went up and the investment industry’s idea of risk was moving too far from a rising benchmark.

Now the risk is the real one that you lose money and investors quite rightly switch on to the importance of capital preservation. If you lose a third of your money you have to grow what you have left by 50 percent to get back to where you started. A year ago the market fell sharply to a new trading range at the bottom of which investors looked at valuations (especially as indicated by the hard reality of dividend yields) and thought the rewards on offer made the risks worth taking. I expect something similar will happen this time around. European shares are cheap. They trade on around 10 times expected earnings (just nine in the UK), dividend yields are often higher than those on corporate bonds and government debt, cash flow is strong and companies have lower levels of borrowing than for 20 years or so. The corporate sector remains quite strong.

Investors have to make a decision in today’s volatile markets. They can attempt to catch the increasingly frequent waves and protect their portfolios during the commensurately frequent downturns or they can accept that this type of market timing is impossible. In that case they must focus on quality – companies with pricing power, good managements, recurring revenues, a spread of clients and robust balance sheets. They must buy these companies at a sensible price and they must hold them through the inevitable sentiment-driven ups and downs. They must, in other words, follow the likes of Warren Buffett and think like business owners.

European politics and macro-economics are a mess but the region is home to many excellent businesses with fantastic prospects in places such as the US and the Far East, where life is going on even while Europe makes a hash of it. Shares in those companies won’t bounce back immediately but in 10 years you may well look back and think that the summer of 2012 was a pretty good time to be investing in these long-term winners.  n
