Rooms with a view

When The Address Downtown Dubai opened its doors in October 2008, it brought to the vibrant city a new luxury experience which raised the bar for elegant living. The 63-storey hotel, the first and flagship property from Emaar Hospitality Group’s home grown The Address Hotels + Resorts brand, introduced a series of innovations which have since been incorporated in four other The Address hotels in Dubai and will soon roll out across the globe as the brand spreads to key destinations.

These innovations include complimentary wireless internet in-room and throughout the hotel’s public spaces, a 24 hour fitness centre and a business lounge which opens around the clock. Another advantage for guests opting to stay in selected suites or club rooms is the privilege of a complete 24-hour stay, whereby the final check-out bill is calculated in 24-hour periods from the moment of check-in. This service has revolutionised the hospitality industry as guests have the option of keeping their rooms for a full 24 hour period from the moment of check-in, without having to follow the traditional check-out time – usually midday – established in the world’s hospitality industry.

From the moment of arrival, guests will marvel at the contemporarily decorated and furnished hotel with its sweeping views towards the iconic Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest tower – and the stunning Dubai Fountain. Located in the heart of Downtown Dubai, one of the world’s most prestigious square mile developments, the hotel is within walking distance of the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination: the Dubai Mall.

Sophisticated socialising
At an imposing 306 metres high, The Address Downtown Dubai offers 196 rooms and suites – many offering spectacular views of Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Fountain – with a rich array of amenities designed to appeal to both business and leisure travellers. With architecture reminiscent of the art deco era, the hotel is stunning by day and strikingly dramatic when creatively illuminated at night.

Marc Dardenne, Chief Executive Officer of Emaar Hospitality Group, says “The defining character of The Address Hotels + Resorts brand is the location advantage we offer, the tangible guest benefits we provide and the service standards that we assure at each of our hotels. Since opening, The Address Downtown Dubai has become a sterling addition to the region’s hospitality sector.”

Excellence in service and convenience for guests are high priorities for the hotel. For example, all check-in formalities are processed in guestrooms upon arrival. All rooms at the hotel vary in design and aesthetics, assuring guests of a highly individualised visit. Apart from spectacular views, the rooms feature lifestyle amenities such as large flat screen televisions and iPod docking stations. The well-designed bathrooms with double vanities, marble floors and mosaic finishes feature luxury toiletries from renowned brands, enhancing the in-room experience. The hotel pampers guests with seven food and beverage choices, including Hukama, a sophisticated Chinese restaurant, and Fazaris, which offers a blend of Japanese, Indian, Arabic and Mediterranean cuisine for all-day dining.

The hotel also offers stylish venues for sophisticated socialising, including the Latin-inspired Calabar lounge and, on the 63rd-floor, the sky lounge Neos – the highest of its kind in Dubai. With majestic views of the Dubai Fountain, it offers the perfect vantage point to enjoy the fountain’s spectacular son et lumière-style shows; when the sun goes down the jets dance in the air, synchronised with light projections and beautiful music, conjuring a haunting spectacle.

Exceptional entertainment
Other options include the inviting Risala Lobby Lounge, the Zeta outdoor pool restaurant and Sahá Cafe – a lakeside coffee shop. All restaurants and lounges within The Address Downtown Dubai are designed to maximise views of Burj Khalifa. The Address’s philosophy of ‘Where Life Happens’ resounds in all its outlets and they are ideal venues for visitors to do business, relax or socialise.

The Spa at The Address Downtown Dubai, with its impressive views of the Dubai Fountain, features 11 treatment rooms, along with aroma rooms, a nail studio and even an ice cellar where guests can cool off after a luxurious treatment. Guests also have the option of receiving treatments on private outdoor terraces.

The 24-hour fitness centre offers scenic vistas of Burj Khalifa; the hotel includes over 1,000sq m of swimming pool space in five separate, tiered pools, including an infinity pool. While the children have their own swimming pool there is also Qix Club offering supervised play for youngsters.

The hotel places strong emphasis on banquets, meetings and events. With a choice of two ballrooms, a boardroom and two meeting rooms, guests are offered a majestic environment for business and social occasions. The Symphony Ballroom, which can be divided into three smaller rooms with sound-proof partitions, boasts a seven metre high ceiling with impressive floor-to-ceiling windows, and can accommodate up to 550 guests. All meeting venues feature the latest technology, while the banqueting team pampers guests with a choice of international cuisine. On the 14th floor, the Bajjah wintertime terrace offers a stylish outdoor option for corporate entertaining, with impressive views of the surrounding iconic neighbourhood.

Oh, Jamaica!

Half Moon, located near Montego Bay in the Rose Hall, Jamaica, has been a magnet for jet setting stars and monarchs for decades. These days, the shining gem of the resort is arguably Fern Tree Spa. Established in November 2007, this haven of tranquility is set in the heart of the resort and stretches across 6,350sq m of indoor and outdoor space.

Serving up a plethora of different components designed to promote health and wellbeing as well as to stimulate the visual senses, Fern Tree encompasses everything from a relaxation lounge and a yoga pavilion to a hydrotherapy swimming pool, a beautiful sculpture garden and bush bath. Add to that a so called ‘meditation labyrinth garden’ – a lush invention designed to help unite body and soul.

Other noteworthy features are the many attractive water features that are scattered around the premises. Combined, these diverse elements add up to a spa recipe that is quite unique, since the formula focuses as much on relaxation as it does on actual spa treatments. “The space holds just nine treatment areas,” says Stephen Phillips, Director of Spa, Wellness and Fitness at Fern Tree Spa. “The rest of the spa is reserved for relaxation. Most other spas lack places in which to lounge before and after your treatment. The ability to truly relax makes a tremendous difference on overall guest experience. We offer many routes to relaxation including a labyrinth for walking meditation, yoga classes on land and in the water and meditation classes.”

Jamaican through and through
Aside from its tranquility inducing qualities, another aspect that makes Fern Tree Spa one of a kind is its strongly site-specific profile. “The most important factor of Fern Tree Spa is the combination of a true indigenous experience using authentic Jamaican ingredients – many of which we grow at the spa – and the parallel emphasis we put on wellness and health education. We are also developing a 100 percent Jamaican line of spa products that will be used in our locker room areas and as part of our treatments. This line will be ‘fresh’ and made in small batches to provide a truly indigenous, Jamaican experience,” explains Phillips.

According to ancient wisdom, the sea holds the key to eternal beauty. Displaying characteristics that are revitalising, rebalancing and healing, the water’s cellular structure has not gained its eminent reputation for nothing. To capitalise on the sea’s indisputable qualities, Fern Tree’s latest invention is the seaside cabana – an accommodation variant that offers exclusive spa treatments in an entirely private setting to complement the spa’s traditional treatment rooms and spa suites.

A range of marine-based treatments is at guests’ disposal at the seaside cabanas, including massages, masks, baths and scrubs – all of which make use of authentic ingredients harvested from the sea. Ocean water, algae, sponges, salt and stones all play a significant part in this sea-laden affair.

Conveying a sense of being virtually immersed in the sea, the cleverly constructed cabanas (there are two of them available) are designed to draw upon the natural healing qualities of the ocean. In terms of architecture, the cabanas are designed in line with a Jamaican-inspired silhouette. Made exclusively of durable Brazilian ipe wood, the cabanas spread across 18sq m and feature high, cathedral-style ceilings that lend a sense of space and quiet drama. The most fetching aspect of the cabanas, however, is their closeness to the sea – the wall that faces the sea is fully opened during treatments and thus gives the pampered guest a thoroughly aquatic experience, complete with a view of the ocean that stretches to the horizon. To enhance this pleasant feeling further, wooden slats have been fitted in the cabana’s floor structure to allow the guest to gaze at the waves rolling beneath them.

For spa enthusiasts who aren’t prone to fall for the siren call of the waters and prefer a form of accommodation that is not quite so sea oriented, yet featuring spectacular views of the sea, Fern Tree Spa also offer six signature beachfront spa suites – the very first of their kind in the Caribbean. These contemporary, state of the art suites incorporate spa treatment areas that can be converted to private spa treatment rooms or fitness studios where guests can practise yoga or the like.

Stella’s touch
Moving on from the nuts and bolts of the Fern Tree concept, and onto the treatments themselves, the indisputable queen of Fern Tree Spa is Stella Gray, the Chief Spa Elder of the establishment. With over 37 years of experience behind her, Gray’s reputation as an industry guru is well rooted. Born and raised in Jamaica, Gray moved to the UK to hone her skills at the Grange Henlow Health Farm before returning to Jamaica to embark on a career at Half Moon at the age of 19.

This was in the day before any on-site spa existed at the resort. To change that fact, Gray played a key role in the creation of Half Moon’s Bodyworks Spa, at which she served as the Spa Director. She later assisted in expanding and developing the new Fern Tree concept where she strives to create unique therapeutic rituals and treatments that focus on each guest’s individual wellness goals. How she achieves this? By creating a tailor made healing experience that balances and unites mind, body and spirit – something that is conceived by incorporating a cherry picked set of ingredients that span meditation, exercise and different stress reduction techniques. Add to that a selection of carefully sourced cleansing and healing remedies made with indigenous herbs, roots, leaves and fruits that Gray personally gathers from her on-site garden on the day of each treatment.

Although Fern Tree at Half Moon is a destination that has much more going for it aside from covetable spa treatments alone, its unique repertoire of therapies are still at the core of the establishment.

The Arrival Ritual is orchestrated as follows. First, guests are treated to a serving of traditional Jamaican Bush while sinking their feet into a footbath infused with either lavender oil or nutmeg oil (nutmeg oil holds rejuvenating, uplifting and energising qualities whereas the lavender option should appeal to guests looking for a calming, relaxing effect). This cleansing ritual represents the removal of the day’s journey, and after that, the rest of the body and soul is ready to be indulged.

Guests that are well versed in spa culture are free to compose their own treatment line-up, but for those who prefer to consult an expert, a Spa Elder will be at their service to tailor a personalised experience suited to each individual’s needs. The Spa Elder will be happy to consult, regardless of whether clients have booked in for a single spa service, a full-day experience or a complete week of pampering and wellbeing. The Spa Elder is specifically trained in the use of local, indigenous ingredients and she always applies her carefully cultivated expertise of time-honoured Jamaican traditions and rituals to create a spa menu that incorporates an all-encompassing list of ingredients sourced from both land and sea. Hand picked herbs and plants are used in combination with sea botanicals to create a unique and results-oriented spa menu.

Signature treatments
Being multi-faceted by nature, all Fern Tree Signature therapies bring together integrated massage and skin care techniques, and incorporate specially crafted Allspice signature blends from Jamaica’s Blue Mountain Aromatics, the healing benefits of the local Jamaican rum, and indigenous handpicked herbs selected by the Spa Elder. Relaxation techniques form part of every signature treatment, helping to reduce stress and create a memorable Jamaican experience. The Island Guided Power Nap provides the ultimate route to true relaxation and should not be missed. To continue treatments at home, all signature treatments include a complimentary gift.

The 80 minute Fern Tree Signature Massage incorporates a set of integrated therapies of Swedish massage, acupressure, lomi lomi and Thai stretches. To give the treatment a local spin, Jamaica’s Blue Mountain Aromatic essential oils are used throughout the massage. It’s rounded off by a Guided Power Nap enhanced with a spritz of Jamaican rum and Allspice body splash. Other covetable products that form part of the treatment are a Revitalising Foot Mask and an Anti Stress Eye Compress.

Fern Tree’s Signature facial also lasts for 80 minutes, and begins with a ritual footbath of Jamaican Cerasee. During this the therapist prepares a blend of carefully selected Jamaican fruits, herbs and other indigenous ingredients to create the ultimate seasonal facial masque. The facial also involves skin analysis, and to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and reverse sun damage, Somme Institute’s cleansing, hydrating and moisturising serum is applied. At the end of the treatment, guests get to enjoy Fern Tree’s signature Guided Power Nap.

The Fern Tree Signature manicure or pedicure (or both, if preferred) starts off with a relaxing ‘ritual soak’ in aroma-infused water. Thereafter hands and/or feet will be exfoliated using natural sea salts and aromatherapy oil blended specifically by the Spa Elder. A relaxing massage with a custom blended moisturising lotion and invigorating splash of Jamaican rum is next, followed by a soothing paraffin wrap to thoroughly hydrate the skin. Finally, choose from a range of polishes or opt to have your nails buffed to perfection.

The Fern Tree Elder’s Journey
Perhaps the most worthwhile treatment of all, and one that is completely unique to Fern Tree, is the Fern Tree Elder’s Journey: a therapy variant where the Spa Elder customises a series of healing treatments and rituals designed to address individuals’ specific goals and needs during their stay at Half Moon. Based on the Elder’s assessment, different elements will come into play, including meditation, exercise, and/or stress reduction techniques. Combined, these components will help the guest to achieve optimum results and to enhance wellbeing further; the Elder’s hand-crafted herbal blends are also used to as an integral part of the treatment.

To give guests the chance to trial treatments before settling for the full session, Fern Tree is offering a “tasting menu” of different treatments to try before the final decision is made as to ensure the treatment matches expectation.

Complimentary mini-treatments are offered every day from 10-11am, and all kinds of options are available including massages, Thai stretches, footbaths, meditation, breathing exercises, and hand and foot scrubs.

South coast splendour

The Algarve is situated in the westernmost region of continental Europe, at the very south of the Portuguese mainland. It is divided into three geographical areas – all of them beautifully scenic – but the long expanses of sandy beach that form the southern coastal region are particularly attractive for travellers. Vilamoura, on the south coast, belongs to the municipality of Loulé, and is a modern, purpose built town-resort; one of the most popular in the Algarve. Just 30 minutes away is Faro Airport, which is served by all major European airlines and has a flight time from London of approximately two and a half hours.

The Marina at Vilamoura is the largest in Portugal, with berths for up to 1,500 yachts. From here boats can explore the fascinating Algarvian coastline, with its myriad coves, beaches and unusual rock formations. Big-game fishing (blue shark, tuna and record breaking black marlin) is popular, while the water sports on offer include scuba diving, water skiing and windsurfing. The marina is a place for people-watching, window shopping or promenading – especially at night, when the entire harbour is illuminated. It’s also the perfect place to sit back and enjoy delicious Portuguese food.

Vilamoura is considered by many to be Portugal’s golfing capital, and also enjoys a reputation as the best golf destination in Europe. With a number of well designed courses offering different levels of difficulty, Vilamoura hosts a number of prestigious international tournaments and presents a challenge to golfers of all levels.

Recommended as the best luxury hotel in Portugal in the 2009 Business Destinations travel awards, the Hilton Vilamoura is an excellent choice for accommodation in the Algarve. As hotel, golf resort and spa, the Hilton Vilamoura offers conference and incentive bookers a modern space for meetings and conferences. The Tejo Ballroom suite has multiple staging options, caters for up to 470 delegates in theatre style or 320 guests for a grand banquet, and is divisible into two smaller suites. For smaller business meetings the Douro Boardroom is fully equipped, and the five Hilton meeting rooms – designed to be used on their own or in conjunction with larger suites – offer modern technology to attract all types of events.

The Blue Lagoon patio courtyard features two impressive cascades, and is the ideal setting to host coffee breaks, cocktails and meals. A fully equipped business centre is available with a dedicated attendant for perfect venue support.

Fine dining experiences at the Hilton Vilamoura include the gourmet restaurant Cilantro, the all-day Moscada Restaurant, and the al fresco Aquarela poolside bar and restaurant. Entertainment and cocktails can be found at the Rubi Bar, and the As Cascatas Beach Club – open from June to September – offers thematic events looking over the beautiful ocean.

The 260 accommodation units at the hotel are spacious and modern, with large terraces and balconies overlooking the amazing waterfall gardens or golf course fairways nearby. Suite talking

Virtually every major UK city can now offer the business traveller a range of serviced apartments as a serious alternative to hotel accommodation. In the last four years the Association of Serviced Apartment Providers (ASAP) has seen its membership double, and its 30 members now collectively represent some 5,000 properties.

The Institute of Travel and Meetings is similarly reporting an increase in demand for serviced apartments among their 500-strong buyer membership. Chief Executive Paul Tilstone says, “Our research confirms that 48 percent of our members report that demand for this product has been increasing, and 57 percent of buyers confirmed that they were using serviced apartments to reduce costs and provide alternatives to traditional hotel content for short term stays of five days or fewer.”

Serviced apartments provide the business traveller with a fully furnished, self-contained flat, including separate areas to cook, sleep, work and eat. David Smith, Chairman of the ASAP, describes serviced apartments as offering “a more complete ‘home-from-home’ experience, where you can properly relax and enjoy more privacy.”

Certainly, one key benefit to apartment living is the extra space offered: on average 30 percent more than a comparable standard of hotel room. Larger apartments offer the space to hold meetings in a lounge or dining area – removing the expense of hiring a separate meeting room – while the largest can be shared by several colleagues who are working together, improving efficiency and further cutting costs.

Ranging from simple studios to four bedroom apartments and penthouse suites, there is a wide variety in the apartments available. Top of the range developments may offer roof terraces or access to a swimming pool or gym – but without the extras such as minibars, restaurant bills and room service, so hated by expense managers throughout the world, serviced apartments still offer transparency and value.

This is a young industry, so the vast majority of developments are modern with contemporary, stylish interiors complete with mood lighting and the latest in-room technology. Naturally, different venues offer different levels of service and amenities, so exploring one’s options – and the conditions of stay and any deposit required – is important. Booking lead time and availability also vary significantly: standard apartments are available for a single night, while top of the range suites may demand a minimum stay of a week. The rate cost of a stay, which can last for several months, generally decreases as the duration increases: for stays of 28 days or more the VAT element reduces to only 3.5 percent.

Just like hotels, careful research pays dividends, and a charter and code of conduct like those the ASAP’s members commit to offers a consistent guarantee.

A tower of treasures

Hotel Panorama by Rhombus, recently announced as one of the Best Business Hotels in China by the 9th China Hotel Forum, is at the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui, one of Hong Kong’s most popular shopping and business hubs. Just one minute away from the MTR metro station, Hotel Panorama sits amid a vast collection of shops, boutiques, museums, restaurants, bars and entertainment centres.

Each of the 324 guestrooms is contemporarily designed with floor-to-ceiling windows, offering breathtaking views of either Victoria Harbour or the city. Silver guestrooms are fitted in comfort and style, with Gold and Platinum rooms passing through luxury and into opulence. Naturally the Platinum Suites provide the utmost in extravagance, with an elegant interior providing a home away from home and magnificent views of the harbour from the hotel’s upper floors.

Santa Lucia Restaurant and Sky Bar, on the hotel’s 38th floor, combines modern cuisine and magical ambience to create a truly unforgettable dining experience. By day it is a bright, naturally lit room with scenic harbour and city views, while after sunset it transforms into a serene canopy of stars and city lights. For a less prestigious (but equally satisfying) repast, the lobby level Café Express is an informal all-day restaurant, providing casual breakfasts, brunches, light lunches and deluxe buffet dinners.

Castle in the clouds
Other world class facilities include a sky garden, fitness centre, executive lounge and business centre. The sky garden and putting green are located on the 40th floor, where guests can relax amid some of the most spectacular and idyllic scenery on earth. Beirut is an exceptional destination. Combining a history that spans the Roman, Phoenician and Ottoman ages with a modern and fun-loving culture, it offers a dazzling nightlife with excellent restaurants, shopping locations, sandy beaches and skiing resorts.

Voted number one destination in 2009 by the New York Times and top party city for 2009 by CNN, Beirut has a variety of interesting international attractions, and a high-end tourism infrastructure to match its recent accolades. The Monroe group’s three locations each have an individual and distinctive charm and style, but the dedication and friendliness of their staff is common throughout.

The Princess – considered the island’s deluxe hotel for adults – also appeals to families, after introducing the Little Seals crèche club, a unique facility that is free of charge for hotel guests.

The destination features ‘nouveau-taverna’ beachside dining, upscale a-la-carte dining with signature Mediterranean dishes, and the Harmony Spa, which offers tropical rain baths and exotic treatments.
